Longwood bonsai garden

A narrow courtyard designed to display Longwood Gardens’ bonsai collection.

Location: kennett square, Pa

Status: under construction

Landscape Architect: reed Hilderbrand

Role: design lead

This narrow courtyard holds the northern edge of the ridge, reflecting an allee on the southern edge and becoming one of the site’s long, shaded corridors. Its scale and rhythm are punctuated by the display of bonsai trees, the patterning of paving and ground cover, and the addition of hedges that echo the site-wide organization of sliding bars. The meandering hortus conclusus is designed for pause and contemplation of the bonsai before opening into a bosque that flips the focus outwards, with distant views to the western meadow.
